Case Study in the vandalism of a beautiful building
Millions
of homeowners have already been misled into destroying the windows of
their properties, but the skills of clever double-glazing salesmen don’t
stop there. They are also winning for themselves a large quantity of
our tax money.
At a school in west London a few years ago £ 200,000 of taxpayers’ money was spent removing elegant and beautiful 100 year-old sash windows from a school. The windows were made of the best quality pine from virgin forests – wood that was properly seasoned and could have lasted for ever. Repairs and repainting would have cost a few thousand pounds.
But a huge grant of money was made available by Tony Blair’s government, supposedly to benefit schools. Instead a large capital grant went straight into the pockets of the double-glazing people. Now the school has modern windows that can’t be opened properly and allow no circulation of air. In hot weather, the children overheat, despite the purchase of energy-hungry fans to try to cool everyone down.
The new windows will last only 20 years and require more taxpayers money for further replacements. This was a scandal, but not enough local people opposed the double-glazing and a beautiful building was ruined for ever. |
